FEEDING YOUR CAT OR KITTEN |
|
Kittens & Growing Cats From birth until about three to four weeks of age, mother's milk should satisfy all the nutritional needs of kittens. After this time, kittens begin to take an interest in other foods. Growing kittens have great demands for nutrients, especially when they are small, so it is important that their first foods are highly palatable, easy to eat and supply complete and balanced nutrition in a concentrated form. WHISKAS Professional Formula Growth Diet has been specially designed to satisfy the nutritional requirements of kittens and growing cats of all breeds, from weaning right through to maturity, particularly in the early stages of rapid growth when protein and energy demands are at their peak. Kittens can he weaned onto moistened dry food. When your kitten arrives in a new home he may show signs of stomach upsets and diarrhoea because of the stress of leaving his mother and adjusting to a new environment. If he develops diarrhoea which persists for more than 24 hours, or becomes severe, consult your veterinarian. If you are changing his diet to WHlSKAS Professional Formula Growth Diet, wait until he has settled in, then introduce the diet gradually over a period of four to five days. The feeding regime for your kitten will depend greatly on his age, breed and individual characteristics, but until they are about four months old, all kittens will need three or four meals per day. Feeding can then be reduced to twice a day. Kittens are unlikely to overeat, so it is often convenient to let him eat as much as he wants at each meal, within reason. A good rule of thumb is to leave the food out for him for 20 - 30 minutes and then to dispose of the uneaten portion at the end of this time. You will find that male kittens will cat more and grow at a faster rate than female kittens and they tend to he heavier as adults. Use the WHISKAS Professional Formula Growth Diet KITTEN FEEDING GUIDE for male or female kittens to work out your kitten's daily feeding requirements. Make sure that your kitten has his own feeding and water howls and that they are kept clean and separate from the family's dishes. Cool, fresh water should always be available. By the time he is about 12 months old, your kitten can be gradually introduced to WHISKAS Professional Formula Conditioning Diet. WHISKAS Professional Formula Growth Diet has a carefully controlled calcium to phosphorus ratio, so if your kitten is normal and healthy there is no need to use any supplements - indeed this could be harmful. If you are thinking of using a supplement you should consult your veterinarian first. Adult Cats After reaching maturity, adult cats need a complete and balanced diet to satisfy their individual nutritional requirements. WHISKAS Professional Formula Conditioning Diet is designed to maintain adult cats of all breeds in superior condition, including those with an active lifestyle. The amount of food that cats need varies widely between individuals and is influenced by the cat's size, activity and condition. Most cats can regulate their food intake, so unless your cat is overweight, there is no need to restrict the quantity given at any one meal. Most cats of nine months and older can be given their daily food divided into two meals, but give smaller frequent meals if it is more convenient for you or if it seems to suit your cat better. Use the Professional Formula Conditioning Diet ADULT FEEDING GUIDE to work out your adult cat's daily feeding requirements. Remember to clean your cat's feed and water bowls regularly and don't leave your cat's food out for a long time. If he does not cat it within a short time, remove it and give him a fresh meal at the next feeding time. If the cat persists in not eating, a visit to your veterinarian will determine whether there is any medical reason for his refusal to cat.
